Dark Ray:
Iran looking to improve Shahab-3 missile after Israeli test
TEHRAN, 07 Aug 2004 (AFP) — Iran aims to soon test an improved version of its Shahab-3 medium-range missile, Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said Saturday, following Israel's boosting of its anti-missile missile capability.
The Shahab-3 is believed to be derived from technology acquired from Pakistan and North Korea, though Shamkhani denied any dealings between Tehran and Pyongyang.
Six Shahab-3 missiles were paraded in Tehran in September during commemorations of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. One of them carried a banner declaring "
We will wipe Israel from the map".
(

Israel is reshaping its deployment strategy for the Arrow anti-ballistic missile system. Israel has decided to centralize its command and control structure for ballistic-missile defense as it faces potentially more dangerous threats from Iran and Syria, says Arieh Herzog, director of Israel's Missile Defence Organization (MDO).
The new system will feature a single command and control site to co-ordinate various launching sites around the country, says Herzog. So far, each battery had its own Citron Tree command and control system. In the future, a central unit will get the inputs from all the different Elbit-made Green Pine radars, and will decide which launcher will fire the missiles.
In a successful intercept test at a California test range last week, the MDO verified one of the components of the new Arrow deployment strategy. Herzog says the radar and command and control center was based about 100km (60 miles) from the launch site during the test.
The MDO and the US Army, which are now evenly splitting their investment in the development program, are also working on a number of capability upgrades to keep pace with Iran's evolving ballistic-missile threat, says Herzog.

Israel eyes centralized defense

Israel used its most recent Arrow Weapon System (AWS) test to evaluate a distributed deployment configuration that it plans to apply to all of its ballistic missile defence systems by the end of the decade, said Arieh Herzog, head of the Israel Missile Defense Organization.
During the 29 July test, off the US west coast, the AWS' command-and-control element was located about 60km from the interceptor's launcher, said Herzog. "We definitely wanted to exercise a scenario where there is a significant distance between the command-and-control site and the launcher."
Israel is establishing a centralized command-and-control center for a national multi-tiered missile defense. It will oversee the country's Arrow and Patriot anti-missile units that will phase out the current system of having separate batteries, each with its own radar and command element.
Instead, the batteries' assets will be reconfigured around the country and linked to the centralized command site. "We will have one command-and-control center nationwide and then we shall have a few sites for the radars and a few sites for the launchers," he said.
The centralized command site would also link to future systems such as Israel Navy Aegis-equipped ships, according to other Israeli defense officials.
